UGANDA LAW SOCIETY LATEST JOB VACANCIES IN UGANDA: RECRUITMENT FOR HEAD OF DEPARTMENT POLICY AND ADVOCACY( VACANCCIES IN UGANDA 2011)

About this job Position:

Uganda Law Society (ULS) is a membership organization established by an Act of Parliament to provide services to its membership and the people of Uganda in general. Its vision is to excel as a professional body in the development of legal profession and promotion of justice in Uganda. Its mission is to improve the professional standards of members of the legal profession, and to promote human rights, and the rule of law, by assisting the Government and the judiciary in the administration and practice of law in Uganda for the benefit of the people of Uganda,
The Society is seeking for qualified and experienced individuals to fill the following positions;
1. HEAD OF DEPARTMENT POLICY AND ADVOCACY (POST)
The Head Policy and Advocacy will work under the direct supervision of the Executive Director and is part of the senior management of the organization, responsible for accessing, generating and providing information on legal policy issues, abuses or violation of human rights and other matters relating to the rule of law in Uganda.

Responsibilities:
• Undertaking public policy research, analysis and providing the Council with information on policy gaps and /or needs to be addressed.
• Carrying out research in relevant areas to gain understanding of public issues and making recommendations for appropriate action.
• Take the lead in the consolidation and production of position j papers and legal opinions of the society to advance the cause, mission and vision of ULS as will be specified from time to time by Executive Director and the council.
• Take the lead in the coordination of the mobilization of resources to sustain the above mission and objectives of the organization
• Actively participating in the senior management meetings and planning sessions.
• Representing ULS and making presentations at various fora to further on the ULS mandate, mission and vision
• Coordinating and supervising the work of the department in liaison with other departmental heads including the performance management of staff under you unit.
• Produce monthly, quarterly and annual reports highlighting key outputs of the operations of your department for consolidation into the ULS periodic and annual reports Prepare and monitor the performance of departmental budgets and work plans ensuring effective usage of resources entrusted to you.
• Carry-out any other duties that may be assigned to you by your supervisor from time to time.

• Strong advocacy skills
• Good research and analytical skills
• Experience in policy formulation and analysis
• Excellent communication, documentation and presentation skills
• Ability to facilitate and coordinate processes
• Proven skills in proposal writing.
• Knowledge of legal frameworks
• Project implementation and management skills.
• An open and result oriented approach to work.
• Strong strategic thought and process facilitation skills
• Knowledge of financial management will be an added advantage
• Previous work with government or development oriented organizations
Qualifications:
• Masters Degree in Law and qualifications considered relevant to the job description will be an added advantage
• 4 years experience in a similar position or equivalent.
• Demonstrable computer knowledge
